The home renovation and design platform Houzz.com.au studied the searches of its 65 million members over the course of the last year to draw six trends mentioned. again and again for its 2022 Emerging Home Design Trends.

From spaces dedicated to activities and entertainment, to making better use of outdoor spaces, here are the top interior design trends of 2022.
Dedicated activity spaces
Since the start of the pandemic, people have been adding activity and entertainment areas to their homes. Houzz saw an increase this year for ‘home bar’ (up 79%), ‘media room’ (up 48%), ‘library’ (up 46%), games” (up 43%) and “studio” (up 43%).
Use of outdoor spaces
Connecting homes to the outdoors is a trend that Houzz says is on the rise. Locals are looking to make the most of outdoor settings with searches on Houzz, with “greenhouse” (up 2x), “terraces” (up 2x) and “alfresco dining” (up 66%) up from last year. Capturing the alfresco vibe inspired by “Palm Springs” also appears to be growing in popularity, with searches up 56%.
It seems that bathrooms are still one of the most popular interior rooms to update in homes. Spending on bathroom renovations rose 13% from $15,000 to $17,000 year over year, according to the latest Houzz & Home Australia 2022 report.
Searches for “bathroom mirrors” (more than 2.5 times more), “bath” (more than 2 times more), “powder room” (64 times more), and “bathroom” (more than more than 38%) jumped on Houzz in 2022 compared to the previous year.
Pool additions or refreshment
Homeowners with pools are diving deep on Houzz for inspiration, with search terms ‘pool house’ (up 2x), ‘pool’ (up 60%), ‘swim spa’ (up over 52% ), ‘pool cabana’ (up 42%) and ‘plunge pool’ (up 29%) up on Houzz year over year.
Preserve charm and character
Preserving a home’s original charm and character also seems to be a priority for homeowners.
Dramatic search spikes for “exposed brickwork” (up nearly 3x), along with “balustrade” (up more than 2x), “Federation” (up 52%) and “industrial (up 41%) show that decorating styles and architectural features, unique to period homes, have become popular on Houzz this year. “Australian native gardens,” well-suited to local growing conditions, also grew on Houzz by more than 2.3x from 2021.
Custom smart storage solutions are becoming increasingly important to homeowners, with a Houzz survey indicating that more than a third have hired a cabinetry or cabinetry professional in the past year ( 32%).
Creating a well-functioning “butler’s pantry” more than quadrupled in Houzz searches in Q1 2022, compared to the same period in 2021 (up 311%). Home organization is increasingly a priority with higher searches on Houzz for “garage storage” (up 90%), “built-in closet” (up 77%), “mudroom” (up up 64%) and “dressing room”‘ (up 58%).
