The American Society of Interior Designers South Central Chapter awarded Arkansas Tech University and WER Architects a 2021 Silver Award in the Design Excellence category.

The honor is in recognition of the Hull Building Student Union, which opened in November 2020.

Sande Mabry, construction coordinator at ATU, accepted the award on behalf of Arkansas Tech.

“Sande worked closely with the architect and our internal clients,” said Brian Lasey, director of ATU’s facilities management office. “She was very involved in the selection of finishes, colors and other factors that contributed to this award.”

The ATU Board of Trustees reviewed and approved plans at their October 2019 meeting to renovate the old swimming pool in the Hull building with the aim of converting it into space for the student union.

The trustees then selected Little Rock-based WER Architects to plan the renovation and awarded a construction contract to Cline Construction Group of Little Rock. Remodeling work on the 17,000 square feet of interior space included in the project began in January 2020.

The Hull Building Student Union provides ATU students with access to social activities such as table tennis, billiards, the latest Xbox and PlayStation video game systems, plush seating designed to encourage interaction, and a space for musical performances and presentations. Chartwells, food service provider at Arkansas Tech, operates a concession area inside the Hull Building Student Union.

The south side of the student union offers a view of Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field, home of Arkansas Tech football.
