What if you found out that the color of your sheets was the cause of your inability to fall asleep?
Interior design experts have revealed five bedding colors you should totally avoid if you want deeper sleep.
Houses and gardens collected some suggestions for anyone ready to make a major bedtime change.
The number one color to avoid when choosing bed sheets is white.
As controversial as it may sound, white sheets are actually not helpful at all for falling asleep.
White sheets look crisp and clean, but that’s where the benefits end.
Alex Savy, Certified Sleep Science Coach and Founder of Sleeping Ocean, says, “It’s best to opt for off-white or tan sheets because bright white fabrics can be too stimulating for the brain.
“This could associate them with daylight, which may lead to decreased levels of a sleep-inducing hormone called melatonin.”
At first glance, light blue may seem like one of the most soothing colors.
Turns out, light blue actually gets in the way of a good night’s sleep.
“Light blue is a cool color that can also create the illusion of daylight,” says Alex.
“It’s better to choose dark blue and navy sheets instead.”
The color red is often associated with love and passion, which means couples can opt for it in their bedroom color scheme.
Red isn’t a smart color choice for sheets, according to sleep expert and MattressNextDay CEO Martin Seeley.
He explains: “Studies have shown that red has such a powerful pigment that it can even cause aggression or anger.
“[This is] the opposite of what you want when you fall asleep.
The color brown has often been compared to neutrality, wide open spaces and earthiness.
Even so, it’s not a color you should go for when buying sheets.
Robert Pagano, co-founder of Sleepline, says, “Brown bed sheets can make a room look drab and unattractive.
The darkest color on the spectrum happens to be black, and it’s also a color he should avoid when it comes to your bed.
“Black sheets can give off [an aesthetic] it seems too dark and serious for some rooms,” says Robert.
“If you’re looking for a quiet, relaxing atmosphere in your bedroom, you might want to avoid black sheets.”
