I am an interior designer and there is a tendency to avoid at all costs
INTERIOR designer Sophie Robinson has shared the interior design trend she hates and why you should avoid this lighting trend.
Robinson is the new host of Dream Home Makeovers with Sophie Robinson, where she admitted recessed ceiling spotlights are her “biggest bugbears” when it comes to interior design trends.
Robinson, who has worked in the design industry for more than 20 years, said recessed ceiling spotlights look like “developer’s acne”, but still noted that most people use this type of fixture. lighting in their home.
She explained that the developers put hundreds of them in a grid, making your room “feel like a take-out fast food joint.”
Many people get recessed spotlights in their ceilings to make their homes look bigger because acne lights save them extra ceiling space.
Despite their benefits, Robinson has always stated that she “absolutely hates them.”
The expert shared that there is an exception for getting recessed spotlights.
“You can have recessed downlights, but don’t have too many and put them in a grid,” she said.
The downlights are mounted and recessed in the ceilings and illuminate downwards.
She recommended placing downlights in areas of the room that you want to highlight.
“Have downlighting above a ottoman, above the sideboard, or highlight a piece of art,” she suggested.
The designer also noted that many electricians she’s spoken to have said that recessed lights that aren’t in a grid “don’t look good,” but she still argues the opposite.
There are even more home trends to avoid, as another interior expert shared three characteristics that instantly make a room look cheap, and one way is the color palette.
